Mazda 3 zooms into contention!

Mazda's progression from the 323 generation has been outstanding. Stylish, zippy, popular and economical, the smaller Mazda 3 models are marching out of showrooms. Given the state of fuel costs, it's a trend that will continue.

The SP23 model is the top of the Mazda 3 range and there are features galore. Check the trendy red and silver instrumentation, the six-disc CD stacker, the ‘sports' feel of the cabin, and the colourful body kit, giving the hatch version a hot and youthful presence. A sedan is also available but our money is on the hatch; its looks and driveability will impress.

The SP23 is a model destined to appeal to younger members, although from $30k for a sporty hatch, its appeal could cross over. To be blunt, it leaves the likes of Corolla, Astra and Civic in its wake (from a performance point of view, as well as style).

It seats four adults easily, scores with safety, accelerates nicely without hurting the hip pocket, handles beautifully and the engine growls appreciably.

The SP23 has good looks and plenty of toys.

Holden recreate the famous FJ

We couldn't deny anyone this mouth-watering opportunity to view the stunning recreation of Holden's famous FJ:

Built as a ‘show' car, there are no plans for production so devotees will only be able to get up close and personal at motor shows across Australia.

Designed and manufactured in secret (by Holden's backroom boffins), the “Efijy” boasts a two pillar-less coupe body which stretches 5.2 metres. There's a whopping 6 litre V8 chromed engine under the hood and the grill is lovingly hand-crafted and polished to perfection.

Small cars lead sales charge

Toyota Corolla topped the monthly model sales charts with some 4,950 units, the first time a small model has won since Hyundai's Excel topped the chart in June 1998. For the record, here's how total sales stacked up last month:

• Toyota : 19,192 units
• Holden: 14,056
• Ford: 10,127
• Mazda: 4,931
• Mitsubishi: 4,684

Pedestrian safety under the spotlight

Manufacturers in Europe and Asia are steadily moving toward pedestrian-friendly bumpers and shock-absorbing bonnets. The bonnets 'pop-up' upon impact, cushioning the head from severe damage.

Infra-red technology is also in the frame; heat-detecting bumpers can alter the behaviour of a vehicle should a collision be imminent. Watch this space.
